The substrate is ordinary black and white cichlid sand mixed equally with pool filter sand, for a nice mushroom color. I scattered tiny Bursa gravel shells here and there, to mimic the bottom of the Lake.

2018-11-12FWIW we have used pool filter sand for years in our freshwater tanks, we have never had any issue with it its cheap and can pick it up at any pool supply store. I went with a much larger grain sand in my new 40 gallon mixed with crushed coral pieces and crushed seashell.

2008-1-30I use pool filter sand, that I found at a swimming pool supply dealer. They sold me like 50 pounds of it for 20 dollars. Only problem is that I dont think it comes in black. I use 2 marineland 350 HOB filters, and for 2 years now, no problems. Just FYI.
